When I was a little girl rummaging around the drawers in my grandparents’ apartment in Jersey City, NJ, I found the records that my mother made when she was a teenager. I’d heard the stories about her years as a professional singer, but the records themselves awed me. Nobody else I knew had ever done anything like that. And when I played them and sang along, it always amazed me that the voice coming through the speakers was the same as the one coming from me.
So many people have the experience of looking in the mirror and saying, “Oh my God, I’m becoming my mother.” That’s how it was for me listening to my mother’s records. That SOUND was the mirror.
I’ve carried my mother’s story - and her music - with me for many years, and now I’ve finally put it all together. This film will share her story and her music at last. It will also tell the tale of that little girl sitting on her mother’s lap, who as an adult climbs through the looking glass into her mother’s teenage world in order to become who she needs to become.
